While reading How Can You Create Fiction When Reality Comes to Call? Written by Carolyn Chute she talks about how difficult it is to write a story while living your everyday life. She expresses how she’s itching to write, but her family, friends, pets and just life in general get in the way. It’s very hard balancing your daily life while also wanting to write. There are so many distractions that we don’t even realize are distractions until we actually want to sit down and focus on one thing. You wouldn’t think that your daily life would be a distraction because, well, it’s life. As a college student there are a number of distractions that come along with trying to write a paper or just doing general things. In Why I Write, Joan Didion explores her writing life. Joan Didion expresses how she understands writing and how she writes. It’s very important to know that even a great writer like her struggled in the beginning. She had to start as a struggling writer and work her way up using a technique that helped her understand. I think it’s interesting that she uses imagery to write and understand writing. As she mention, “I write entirely to find out what I’m thinking, what I’m looking at, what I see and what it means”. She had to question herself as a writer to know why she writes. Joan Didion takes the time to visualize and describe what she reads/writes. The saying “seeing is believing” is extremely important as a writer. Not only is it important to the writer, but to the reader as well. If you think about it, you’re an artist. Your writing utensil is your paint brush and your paper, notepad, laptop, etc. is your canvas. Make amazing art for your readers!
When I actually asked myself, why do I write? I came to a long pause. I never really thought of why I wrote what I wrote. I generally only write if I have to, but when I was younger I would write as a way to relax and vent. Now that I’m older I no longer write to relax, only when I have to. At one point I would write daily, just a page or page and a half about my day. I don’t have any sisters so writing was a way of talking about my day basically. I had several notebooks that were my daily journals. I still have them and I enjoy reading through them to see where I was when I was younger. I wish I still had the time to write daily. |
