When I say new beginnings I’m talking about my future goals and plans I can’t wait to achieve and accomplish. One of my main goals that will start off my new beginnings journey is moving down south to Georgia or South or North Carolina. That has been a dream of mine for almost two years now and it’s a dream I’m sticking to. I’ve already started looking at places even though I know things will change by the time I start my journey but I just get a lot of joy looking at future homes down south. Moving will be a great way to start off because I’ll be in a new state and city, in a new environment that isn’t familiar to me. I was born in Philadelphia and although I love the city I’m from, I don’t feel that it offers me much plus the cost of living in Philly is ridiculous. I’ve visited Georgia with my great grandma when I was younger and it’s definitely a place I can see myself living. My new beginnings don’t just include living somewhere new but also a new job, a new car, and maybe even a new dog. Once I’m settled in my new place I also want to travel places and have new experiences. I want to travel out of the country, eat foods I can’t pronounce, learn a language while in that country, get close up with exotic animals, etc. I want to do things that I don’t do on a daily basis, something that will create great memories and stories. I don’t want to just live life but I want to enjoy it, I want to be happy with the things I’ve done in my life. I also want to meet and enjoy people of different cultures, I want to see how people live and what their practices are and what life means to them. Things that I find difficult may be the simplest thing to someone in a different country or culture so I want to experience it and learn from people. I want to gain experience and knowledge in my new beginnings journey.

Last time I wrote my student choice blog assignment about my dogs but just before that when I was thinking of a topic my girlfriend was like “write about me! write about me!”. I chose to write about my dogs last time so this time I’ll write about her like she asked. Her name is Toni and she’s really one of the most amazing people I’ve ever met, plus we’re the same sign (we’re Virgos). She’s really down to earth and willing to do and try anything to make me happy which is difficult because I’m difficult. Toni always laughs at my corny jokes and it really feels like I’m around my bestfriend when I’m around her. We do argue a lot but I think it’s because we’re so much alike so neither of us backs down on how we feel about things. Although we argue a lot we always make up right after because our arguments are never about anything serious anyway. We fight, make up, and play around like sisters which is always for me because it makes me feel like I can talk to her and joke with her about anything. I think the best relationships are built off of friendships and bonds first, and we have that. The biggest thing that gets us through is how we’re so much alike in positive ways like we both like to try new things and go new places, we share a lot of the same goals and we’re both people who feel strongly and are passionate about each other. I didn’t want to write about my girlfriend at first because there is so much I could/want to say about her that would take up way more than 350 words but I knew it would make her happy if I wrote about her.
I’m sure all animal lovers believe their animals are the most amazing animals in the world but I’ll have to say that I have the two most incredible dogs in the world. I have a three year old shit-zu/poodle mix named Kendra and a puppy American bull dog named Shelly. Kendra is a small breed dog and she’s like a human trapped in a dog body. Shelly on the other hand is a big breed dog and a little more “dog-like”. When guests come over my house they’re usually scared of Shelly because she’s bigger and more energetic than Kendra but honestly, Kendra is the one they should fear. They always say it’s the small dogs that are feisty; whoever “they” are isn’t lying. When I say Kendra is a human trapped in a dog’s body, I mean it. She gets very bad attitudes, will definitely curse you out in dog language, likes to wear clothes and will make it known when she doesn’t like someone. Even though I consider Kendra to be the craziest dog I’ve ever met, she a great protector despite her size. She is always alert and ready to protect the family no matter what, plus she’s just so little and adorable. Shelly is much more calm but she follows after Kendra in learning how to protect the family. Shelly is more dog-like but has more human problems. She has sleep apnea, she’s allergic to salt for snow and ice, has seasonal allergies and can only have certain food because of her digestive system. Living with Kendra and Shelly I get the best of both worlds, a small feisty dog and a big calm teddy bear dog. I wouldn’t trade either of my two crazy worlds, I love my dogs.
In this blog post I will be exploring the similarities between Chef's Table: Francis Mallman and our composition course. Below are three specific questions about the Chef's Table episode. Question #1: How does this episode fit into the narrative mode? The episode fits into narrative mode because Mallman is telling the audience a story of his childhood and how he became the chef he is today. He used visuals when telling us the story. We got to see Mallman's kitchen with the white wood panel cabinets, the stack of cigars boxes, oils on the shelf, and the old fashion wood burning oven. To actually see how he lives on a daily basis while telling us his story allows us as the audience to connect with him more. Questions #2: How does Mallman's story connect to the hiraeth story you are writing in this class? Consider his discussions about home and childhood. Mallman's story connects to the hireath story I am writing in class because I am also wishing to go back to a time that is no more. Mallman mentions "going back to those times of childhood" which I think everyone wants. Everyone wants to be a child again with no worries, bills or real concerns. Mallman and his eldest daughter also talks about Los Negros and how they long for the little island to be how it used to. Question #3: What major ideas/themes from this episode connect to ideas/themes from our composition course? Consider Mallmann's argument about composing a good dish, examining his life environments, and being productive. The major ideas/themes from this episode that connect with our composition course is the idea of composing. The idea of composing is using two or more elements to create a cohesive message which Mallman does very well. He doesn't cook alone, he works with a team to compose his dishes. Mallman states "you have to respect what you cook" because cooking is an art. He uses maestranza which translates to "the people who are around you helping". Mallman believes in freedom in everything you do, he has a very free way of living and I admire that. One thing I can say about myself is that it is undeniably true that I am a procrastinator. I’m not proud of it but I just can’t seem to help it no matter what. I procrastinate with just about everything; packing for a trip, school work, and even making phone calls. Do I procrastinate because I’m lazy? It is because I’m too tired? Do I give myself enough time? It is because I don’t care enough to do the tasks? The answer is, I’m not really sure myself. Sometimes I am too tired and just have a lot going on but most of the time it’s my time management. It’s not that I don’t have enough time; I actually think I have all the time in the world. I always tell myself “I’ll do it tomorrow” or “I’ll do it later”. That’s only an excuse I use to make myself think I have more time than I actually do. Time management has been a problem for me my whole life which caused me to procrastinate. Honestly, some of my best school work has come from procrastination but procrastinating doesn’t work in every case. Sometimes procrastinating just causes me to hand in effortless work, while other times my work has the most effort from me doing it in a very intense time frame. Even though procrastination has worked for me in some cases, I can’t be a procrastinator my whole life. I’ll end up late to my own funeral if I continue to do things like I’ve been doing it. In an article I read on Forbes.com it suggests “If you’re tempted to procrastinate, find a way to visualize your future self. Focus on the pain that results from putting things off, contrasted with the relief of having completed your task”. When I think of it from that point of view it makes much more sense. I would be relieved if I do the tasks ahead of time, instead of stressing and rushing at the last minute to get it done. It is a great suggestion but it’s up to me to implement it and try different tactics to try to procrastinate less.
After 5 attempts of doing this reflection over the past 3 days because of my dumb phone, this is it. Originally my reflection was well thought out and about 3-4 minutes long but after 5 times I forgot most of what I said in the first video. This is my midterm reflection video about where I feel I am at this point in the semester.
Link to video (just in case)- Midterm Reflection Who did I work with to compose my project? Was this a good approach?
I worked with myself to compose my project. This was a good approach. What was the most difficult part of my writing process? Why? What did I do to overcome the obstacles? The most difficult part of my writing process was time management because my personal life is very hectic. To overcome the obstacle, I sat down and started writing as soon as I got free time. When did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this project later than I should I have. It wasn’t a good approach. Where did I write this project? Good approach? I wrote this project at home. It wasn’t a good approach because I wasn’t able to focus as much as I would’ve if I wrote it at a library or at school. Why did I choose to write about my chosen topic? I choose to write about my chosen topic because I am very big on trust. I think trust is very important and a very delicate thing to give someone. How will I adapt/revise my writing process for future revision of this project? In the future if I chose to revise this project I will manage my time better and write somewhere other than home. ENG 100 Assignment #3: Film-Based Argument March 23, 2017 Are People Trustworthy? In the film, Survivor, screenwriter Philip Shelby writes about Kate Abbott’s struggles with saving America from a terrorist attack. Abbott is a secret service agent who learns of a plot where a sniper will shoot a gas bomb in Times Square in an attempt to kill innocent civilians. In the beginning of the movie, just after the first bombing that killed Abbott’s friends, we find out that the sniper is also out to get Abbott. Once she discovers that the first bombing at the restaurant was planned and just the beginning of the horrific attack yet to come, she became a threat to the terrorist and the sniper (The Watchmaker). At that point, Abbott’s own life and millions of others lives were on the line but she was determined to save the world from a terrorist attack. Kate Abbott went through many obstacles throughout the movie because she didn’t know who to trust or who was on her side. If you were in that position, how would you determine who to trust? What criteria would you use in that situation or your daily life to determine who is worth trusting? Everyone uses different criteria to determine who they should and should not trust. Abbott should have used good judgment, asking questions and watched people’s actions. In the movie I think Abbott used all three as a way to determine who to trust. In my opinion, I think she did everything right. Determining who to trust can be very difficult and frustrating because trust is very delicate and must be handled with care. One thing Abbott did when determining who to trust was use good judgment. When the bombing happened at the restaurant where Abbott was supposed to be, she knew something wasn’t right. She did what she should have and went with her gut feeling about the incident. Luckily, Abbott used her good judgment and started to investigate only to find out she is now being hunted by a notorious sniper/bomber. At that moment, trust became very scarce. Abbott couldn’t even trust her own boss or colleagues, everything changed. Often times, people go against their better judgment when it comes to trusting people. Abbott was unsure who to trust and who would actually help, thankfully, her instincts were right. I’m sure everyone has heard the saying “actions speak louder than words”. What a person does means much more than what they say. In some cases people overlook what someone actions may be telling them, putting themselves in difficult situations. After Kate Abbott realized she was being hunted by a killer, she began to pay attention to everyone’s actions. Actions play a significant role in trusting someone. The way a person talks to you, eye contact, body language, and the way they respond to situations are all things that should be paid close attention to. Paying attention to actions was one of the things that saved millions of people and Abbott’s life. After the bombing when Abbott ran into Bill she noticed his actions were very suspicious. Abbott saw that Bill’s body language was off and he wouldn’t answer any of her questions. Once she realized how Bill was acting and responding to the things she was saying, she knew she couldn’t trust him. Using someone’s actions as criteria to determine if they’re trustworthy can be very helpful. If a person is acting a certain way or giving off a certain vibe, you should go with your instinct. Many people find that asking questions are a way of getting to know someone. When you’re trying to get to know someone and determine if you should trust them, asking questions are important. Throughout the whole movie Abbott did nothing but ask questions. She questions every move made by herself, the bomber, her colleagues and practically everyone around her. Asking questions got Abbott very far in the movie and would have gotten her very far in her daily life as well. From each question you ask you learn a little, weather you know it or not. Questioning is about learning something new, it doesn’t hurts to ask regardless of the situation. Abbott questioned why Bill did what he did, why the terrorist came to America to get revenge, why The Watchmaker was after her, and why some of her colleagues didn’t believe her about the terrorist attack. Asking questions is never a bad thing especially when you’re putting your trust on the line. In conclusion, everyone has their own criteria for what it takes to trust someone. I think Kate Abbott used the perfect criteria when it came to who she should trust. Abbott’s and the world’s lives were on the line, Abbott went through everything possible to stop a horrible attack that almost took place. Having people she could trust is what helped Abbott the most.
